Port of Seattle Veterans Fellow - Safety Assurance Specialist in Seattle, Washington

Some of what you'll be doing:

The Port of Seattle is committed to assisting military personnel departing active-duty service transition to civilian employment. The Veteran's Fellowship Program is designed to provide short term (6 months) employment that will assist veterans selected for the program in the following areas:

  • Identifying transferrable skills

  • Exposure to a civilian work environment

  • Career assistance

  • Exposure to corporate business practices

  • Mentoring

  • Resume and interview assistance

This role provides safety information about what is happening live on the airfield and helps Aviation Operations know what key safety issues are occurring across the airfield operation.

  • You will collect information on key safety behaviors and address egregious safety issues with airfield employees.

  • You will perform inspections of vehicles and equipment with airfield employees to identify and document safety issues.

  • You will work with airfield tenants to inform them about key issues in their operations and provide safety support and oversight.

  • You will perform other duties as assigned.

Who you are:

  • A Veteran – You have a minimum of three (3) years of active duty or mobilized reserve duty service in a branch of the U.S. Military Service (which includes the United States Coast Guard). Documentation of an honorable discharge from active or reserve status must be presented as part of the application process. Veterans Fellowship applicants must be within twenty-four (24) months of discharge to apply for a fellowship unless they have not worked full-time since their discharge and have been a full-time student in a degree or certification program since their discharge.

  • Problem Solver – You have proven critical thinking and judgement skills, including the ability to define, analyze and resolve problems and issues. You are emotionally intelligent and able to work calmly and patiently with a wide variety of people. You are able to manage priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, work effectively in a high-pressure, fast-moving environment with constant interruptions and changing priorities.

  • Technically Skilled – You have advanced technical skills in utilizing all Microsoft Office technologies.

What else you need to know:

  • Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to various sites.

  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.

  • Work Environment – This work will primarily take place at/near SEA Airport. You will generally work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, and/or various hazardous materials.

  • Limited Duration – This is a limited duration position and is expected to last no longer than six months.

  • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.

  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you will/must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.

  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington State within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
