Port of Seattle Director, Engineering Department Operations in Seattle, Washington

Some of what you'll be doing:

As the Director, Engineering Department Operations, you will lead a unified and centralized operations backbone, supervising and providing guidance to each group leader, each responsible for a critical function across the Engineering department and in collaboration with the operating divisions at the Port. You will also ensure the cohesive and strategic integration of administrative support, operations & finance, and contract administration to support the overall mission department.

  • You will lead, mentor, and coordinate a team of three branch managers/supervisors to ensure alignment with the Engineering Department’s goals.

  • You will develop strategies to integrate administrative support, operations & finance, and contract administration functions for optimal performance and support the needs of the department.

  • You will serve as a key advisor to the department leadership, providing insights and recommendations to support strategic planning and decision-making.

  • You will create department policy ensuring compliance with laws, regulations and Port standards.

  • You will develop and implement strategic plans to align operations, drive innovative and continuous improvement, and implement technology to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness.

  • You will advocate for the department’s needs and priorities within the broader organizational context while collaborating with various departments to ensure seamless business execution.

  • You will ensure effective management of financial operations, budgeting, fleet, facilities, and asset management, in coordination with Corporate Finance & Budget department.

  • You will develop and monitor strategies for the efficient utilization of assets, fleet, and facilities to support engineering activities.

  • You will provide leadership for the contract function, including supporting the management of the procurement process for multi-year, complex service contracts. You will also ensure compliance with budgetary constraints, policies, and procedures in the management of contracts and service agreements.

  • You will coordinate with Engineering leadership to provide strategic direction on contract negotiation, administration, and closeout processes to mitigate risks and optimize outcomes.

  • You will establish and maintain robust communication and information-sharing systems to support collaboration and transparency internally and externally. You will also ensure timely and accurate dissemination of information to relevant stakeholders.

Who you are:

  • Experienced – You have eight (8) years of experience in strategic planning, business processes, and/or process improvement and you have four (4) years of experience supervising staff and managing a function related to strategic planning, business processes, and/or process improvement.

  • Desired – We hope you have experience in design and construction environment.

What else you need to know:

  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You may be required to work during emergencies.

  • Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.

  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
